When power sweeping, the brush head expands through centrifugal force to suite the flue (chimney) that we are sweeping.
Chimneys may be straight or contain many changes of direction. Especially during winter, when there is a need for plenty of fires to be lit, we need to pay special attention to our chimney and make sure it is safe for use. A layer of creosote builds up on the inside of the chimney, producing soot and tarry smoke and therefore restricting the flow and posing as a potential fire hazard by catching fire at any given moment.
It is advisable to carry out this maintenance in autumn before the heavy use and fire lighting season begins and protect your family against possible blockages, smoke leaks, inadequate ventilation, down draft and tar build up.
A common misconception is that only chimneys using solid fuel need cleaning, but even with a gas flame effect fire, if a new appliance is being installed in a chimney previously used for solid fuel, it should be swept beforehand.
