When we talk about upholstery we refer to the soft, padded textile covering that is fixed to furniture such as armchairs and sofas. Synthetic fibers such as polyester, etc are fairly easy to clean by wiping down without ruining the color or the fabric. If, however, your furnishings use more than 50% cotton or natural fabrics you should consider getting them professionally cleaned, fabrics can be a bit of a mystery sometimes because they can be varied, such as cotton, wool, silk, acetate, linen, rayon, and acrylic including blends of these fabrics. In addition they have been dyed with different colors, in different ways, and the age of the upholstery should also be taken into account. These fabrics require special care to clean and are just too easy to ruin if you don’t know what you’re doing. Most furniture manufacturers recommend that you do not wait until the fabric is badly soiled before you have your furniture cleaned.
